Research, Data, and Strategies to Expand Housing Opportunities Across Oklahoma

Housing for Communities is proud to announce the release of its latest housing policy paper, Possibility on the Prairie: Strategies for Housing in Oklahoma, providing research, data, and policy recommendations to help address housing challenges facing communities across the state.

As Oklahoma communities continue to experience housing shortages, affordability concerns, workforce housing needs, and barriers to development, local leaders are seeking practical solutions that support growth and long-term community stability. This report examines key housing trends impacting Oklahoma and outlines strategies designed to increase housing production, strengthen communities, and expand housing opportunities for Oklahoma families, seniors, and workers.

The policy paper explores topics including housing supply and demand, workforce housing, development barriers, infrastructure considerations, and local policy approaches that can help communities meet current and future housing needs. Developed through research and collaboration with housing stakeholders, the report serves as a resource for elected officials, developers, nonprofit organizations, planners, housing advocates, and community leaders working to create sustainable housing solutions.

"Housing impacts every aspect of a community's success—from workforce development and economic growth to quality of life," said Housing for Communities. "This report is intended to support informed decision-making and encourage meaningful conversations about the future of housing across Oklahoma."

The release of Possibility on the Prairie reflects Housing for Communities' ongoing commitment to advancing housing solutions through research, education, technical assistance, and community collaboration. By providing data-driven insights and practical recommendations, the report aims to help communities identify opportunities and implement strategies that support housing growth and economic development.

On Tuesday, Housing For Communities welcomed housing professionals, healthcare leaders, advocates, developers, nonprofits, government agencies, and community partners from across the state for Safe, Stable & Supported: Addressing Oklahoma’s Senior Housing Gap at Metro Tech OKC.

The event focused on one of Oklahoma’s growing challenges — ensuring older adults have access to safe, affordable, accessible, and supportive housing options as the state’s population continues to age.

According to data shared from the Oklahoma Center for Geroscience and Healthy Aging at OU and Oklahoma Human Services, Oklahoma seniors are projected to outnumber children within the next ten years, while the state’s senior population is expected to increase by 21%. These trends highlight the increasing importance of collaboration, planning, and investment in housing and supportive services for older adults across Oklahoma.

Throughout the day, attendees participated in presentations and panel discussions covering topics such as:

  • Aging in place and accessibility

  • Senior housing development and rehabilitation

  • Supportive housing and healthcare partnerships

  • Housing policy and community planning

  • Financing strategies and funding opportunities

  • Innovative housing models and community collaboration

The event created space for professionals from multiple sectors to share ideas, discuss challenges, and explore practical solutions that support aging with dignity, independence, and stability.

Housing For Communities extends a sincere thank you to all speakers, panelists, attendees, sponsors, and exhibitors who contributed their time, expertise, and support to make the event successful.
